The hosts secured a 93-run victory
Pakistan terminated world champions the Proteas' winning streak by sealing a 93-run win in an exciting and hard-fought first Test in the city of Lahore.
The Proteas, who had a 10-match winning streak in the longest format ended with victory over the Aussies in the WTC final in June, were bowled out for 183 in pursuit of 277.
Having resumed on 51-2, they saw the dismissal of century-maker De Zorzi lbw to pace bowler Afridi to the third ball of the day to push the finely-poised chase in the home team's favor.
Left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who took 10-191 in the game, removed Tristan Stubbs for two and bowled Dewald Brevis, who put up a fight with a rapid 54.
Off-spinner Sajid Khan also capitalized on sharp turn to terminate opening batsman Ryan Rickelton's stay - he lasted 145 deliveries for 45 - and Afridi came back in the post-lunch session to knock over the tail with a fine display of reverse swing.
He trapped Kyle Verreynne leg before for nineteen and bowled Prenelan Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to secure the victory.
It was both sides' opening game of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle and moves Pakistan straight into second place after table-toppers Australia.
Their victory was built around key performances of ninety-three by opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and, crucially, number seven Salman Agha which lifted them to 378.
After that slow bowlers Noman and Sajid Khan took advantage of favourable home conditions, as they had in their series victory over England last year, to maintain their advantage.
The second and last match begins on 20 October.
